Nightray mini

Because of something I was discussing with Theo yesterday, I wrote a silly little fic of Cedric and Étienne when they were children, telling about one of the times Etty slept over.
And here's a crappy doodle to go along with it yay. C:
“... nii... Ced-nii...”
Tormented by the insistent calling, Cedric frowned uncomfortably in his sleep and slowly opened his eyes. It was quite dark, it was the middle of the night after all. Still confused about being waken up like that, the small boy slowly sat up on his bed. He lazily rubbed his eyes to find his younger cousin crawling over his bed. The younger boy was also in his pjs, which looked more like a sailor outfit, and stared at him wide awake with his large pleading sky blue eyes.
“Ced-nii…” He started in a very somber and solemn tone. “I need your help to fulfill a very important task!” Cedric yawned, what in the world could he be babbling about at this time and hour? This younger cousin of his happened to be Étienne, a rather distant cousin, their grandparents were brothers apparently. Sometimes Étienne came over to the Nightray main manor to spend a few days. Since Cedric was an only child and wasn’t allowed to leave the manor, they often had Étienne keep him some company. The two of them were only one year apart in age, currently Cedric was 12 and Étienne 11, therefore they had almost the same height, except that Cedric was still slightly taller, being the older one.
“What’s it?” Cedric asked hoping this wasn’t yet another one of his ideas for a prank. What was he doing in his room anyway? Although they often slept together when they were smaller, they were now a bit too old for that. Étienne on all four, leaned closer clinging to the sheets, he had a very serious expression, but it could be that he was just very embarrassed to say it. “Please let’s go to the restroom together!” He finally spat it out with certain despair in his voice.
“Whaaaat?” Cedric flinched back in disbelief. “Go by yourself!” He barked angrily and rolled over pulling the blanket over himself. What the hell, he couldn’t believe it, waking him up just for that! But now that he thought about it, it wasn’t the first time he did that.
“Ced-nii! C’mooon~! Your house is so dark and creepy at night! I tried to go by myself but I heard all these strange noises! Pleaaase!” Étienne climbed over him and shook him. He had indeed attempted to go by himself, but at the first strange sound he heard, he ran all the way back in fear. “They say there’s a door in the Nightray manor that takes you straight to hell! What if I walk into it by mistake?! Or a ghost comes out!” Étienne whined and insistently pleaded all frightened. Cedric sighed, looks like he wouldn’t let him sleep.
He pushed Étienne from over him causing the younger boy to tumble over and spread himself on the bed. Cedric sat back down again. “How many times do I have to tell you? There are no such things as ghosts!” Étienne looked up at him from where he was lying and pouted. “Uuh… you can only say these things because you live here, Ced-nii! You know what door not to open!” Cedric sighed and placed his hand on his face. Well, there was in fact a very strange door at the Nightray manor, but it wasn’t a door you could easily walk into, it was sealed by chains and located at an isolated part of the manor.
“Fine, you’re such a baby.” Cedric cockily mumbled, obviously he wasn’t any closer to being an adult himself, and he could be quite the crybaby too, despite the tough front he put up. The small boy picked up his glasses on the side table and climbed down the big four post bed sliding his feet into a couple of fluffy slippers. He turned around to Étienne and held out his hand for the smaller one with the usual stuck-up expression. At this, Étienne’s face instantly brightened up, and he soon followed after his older cousin with a content smile.
Hand to hand, the two young boys walked through the dark corridor of the manor. There was a full moon outside which allowed some light to slip in through the windows. Cedric held onto a candle. The air was a little chilly, and the wind seemed to whistle with a haunting voice outside. Feeling the other’s hand trembling against his, Cedric, who led the way, glanced over his shoulder to find his younger cousin looking more frightened and tense than ever. Biting at his fingernails, his eyes nervously darted in different directions at the smallest noise. Cedric frowned, what he was so scared about? The younger boy jumped when he heard a scratching sound. “D-Did you hear that?! It sounded like someone crawling!”
Cedric blinked and tensed up feeling a little alarmed already. He became oddly silent and quickly surveyed their surroundings, not much could be seen in that darkness except for the shadows of the trees outside creeping inside. “C-Ced-nii?” Étienne squeezed his hand tighter. “Geez, calm down already… it’s just the tree outside, see?” He pointed towards one of the windows. The night breeze outside was strong, causing the leafless tree branches to scrape the walls and windows from outside. When Cedric mentioned it, they could hear it again coming from there. They both sighed.
They walked past the wide set of stairs that led to the entrance hall downstairs and a creaking strange noise echoed from below. “A-And that?! What’s that?!” Étienne panicked again and clung to Cedric’s arm. Was there someone down below? They couldn’t see anything, it was pitch black. “D-Don’t ask me about every little thing! I hear these noises like every day!” Cedric snapped and frowned annoyed as he fastened his pace. Étienne’s fear didn’t subside in the least, he rushed after Cedric, agitated. “Then what’s it, Ced-nii!” He insisted. The truth is Cedric didn’t know for sure either. Étienne was so easily scared, it was beginning to rub off on him as well, but he couldn’t let it show. “It’s just… hmm… you know, like… when the house is settling down at night!” He tried. “What is with this explanation?” Étienne knitted his eyebrows in disbelief. “Like the house was alive or something?” Ok, he wasn’t buying it.
Cedric stopped in front of one of the doors. “Ugh, nevermind! Didn’t you want to go to the restroom? We’re here! C’mon, hurry up!” Étienne blinked. He hadn’t realized they were already there. He smiled cheerfully, it was indeed so much easier to get there in the company of someone else! He walked inside while Cedric waited at the door, holding up the candle.
The creaking noises didn’t stop, Cedric pressed his lips together and shivered as he glanced from side to side. His own house had never looked so creepy before. Now that he thought about it, it sounded like someone rolling upon an old wooden board floor. The noise suddenly resounded closer from above. “Ok, I’m done!” Étienne announced as he came out. “Ced-nii?” He tilted his head. Cedric looked pale, squeezing himself against the wall. “W-What took you so long!” He quickly tried to recompose himself. “C’mon, let’s go back!” He pulled Étienne by the hand and rushed back through the corridor.
This strange behavior only made Étienne nervous. As they walked past the set of stairs, a cold breeze blew from downstairs extinguishing the candle fire. Cedric froze in place, Étienne began to tremble with his eyes open wide in the complete darkness that engulfed them. The strange noise came again, now from the same floor. “C-Ced-nii… I’m scared… w-what now?” Étienne whispered with a shaky voice, unlike Cedric he was barefoot, with all his fear he felt even colder. Good thing he had just relieved himself a minute ago. “I-It’ll be alright… I have the way memorized! It’s nothing, let’s go!” Cedric gulped. “W-Why are we whispering then?!?!” Étienne was completely terrified by now, tears welled up in the corner of his eyes.
Cedric stopped when he bumped against something large. It almost felt like a wall. But there shouldn’t be a wall there. His eyes widened. Suddenly a small flame lit up in front of them illuminating the ghostly face of a very pale man with deep and dark shadows under his eyes. “Can I hel...” “AAAAHHHHHH!!!” Cedric and Étienne screamed in terror and dashed as fast as they could. They rushed inside Cedric’s bedroom and slammed the door shut. They panted heavily with their hearts racing through their chests as they slid down to the floor with their backs against the door.
“What was that? Was it really a ghost?” Étienne asked as he tried to catch his breath. Cedric slowly blinked as he stopped to think about it. He lowered his head and his shoulders shook as he began to giggle. “Hu… huhuhuahaha…” Étienne looked at his older cousin startled. “Why are you laughing, Ced-nii? You’re creeping me out!”
“That was just Diggory, the servant who keeps watch for the night shift! He probably heard our voices and came to check it out…” Cedric continued to laugh. He couldn’t believe they got all scared over something like that! It took Étienne some time to finally understand what had happened and he sheepishly laughed along as well. He then stopped and gave Cedric’s sleeve a light tug. “Er, um, Ced-nii…” He looked up at his older cousin with the same pleading eyes he had before this all started, Cedric knew this couldn’t be a good sign. “Do you think I could sleep here for tonight anyway? I don’t wanna go back to my room anymore.” Cedric stared back at the other boy with surprise in his eyes. After all that happened Cedric wasn’t feeling sleepy in the slightest. Although Cedric was the one who always asked Étienne to sleep with him when they were smaller, he didn’t feel that way so much anymore. Back then he detested to sleep alone.
“Geez, you’re a scaredy-cat.” Cedric glanced at him disapprovingly from the corner or his eyes as he pushed up his glasses. “Ahh! You were just as scared as I was! I saw it!” Étienne protested with a pout and lightly blushed. Cedric quickly retorted looking offended. “I-It was only because you kept freaking out about every little thing!!”
“It’s not my fault your house is so creepy! And what’s up with that creepy servant? Diggory? What kind of name is that?!” The boys continued to argue as they faced each other. Cedric eventually gave in letting out a sigh. “Fine, fine, it’s not like I care! You can sleep here.” He climbed up his bed, removed his glasses and lay down with his back turned at him. Luckily, Cedric’s bed was actually very large. Étienne climbed up and lay down on the opposite side with his back turned at his cousin as well. They remained silently like that for quite a while. Cedric heard the tree branches gently knocking at the glass window.
“Etty? Are you still awake?” He whispered. No answer came and Cedric turned around to find Étienne deep asleep and softly snoring. “Geez…” He mumbled again. Étienne was so terrified minutes ago and now he slept so peacefully, he was probably worn out after everything. Well, this wasn’t so bad, it was kind of fun also, Cedric thought to himself with a light smile. He then curled up next to Étienne and remained like that until he fell asleep clinging to the other boy’s shirt like he used to when they were smaller.

The end.

I think the best thing in your fics is the fact that you can write so ... well the reactions of others' characters. They feel like they should. That's amazing.
